8 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking – Lemosho Route

Overview

This 8-day Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route trek is widely regarded as the most scenic and best-balanced route on the mountain, offering a premium trekking experience with excellent acclimatization, low crowd levels at the start, and consistently high summit success rates.
The journey begins on the quiet western slopes of Kilimanjaro, where untouched rainforest and remote wilderness set the tone for an exclusive and immersive ascent. Unlike busier routes, Lemosho provides a gradual build-up, allowing the body to adapt naturally while experiencing some of the most diverse landscapes on the mountain.
As the trek progresses, the environment transforms dramatically — from lush rainforest to alpine moorland, volcanic ridges, high-altitude deserts, and finally the glacial summit zone of Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
This route is designed for trekkers seeking a premium, well-paced, and highly scenic Kilimanjaro experience with maximum comfort in acclimatization planning and wilderness immersion.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

After breakfast in Moshi or Arusha, transfer to Londorossi Gate for registration and briefing. Begin your trek through untouched montane rainforest, one of the most pristine and quiet sections of Kilimanjaro. The trail is peaceful, green, and atmospheric, with dense vegetation, towering trees, and rich birdlife. Arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp) for dinner and overnight camping.
After breakfast, continue ascending as the rainforest gradually transitions into heath and moorland zones. The trail opens into wider landscapes with volcanic formations and distant views of the plateau. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp, located on the expansive Shira Plateau, for rest and overnight camping under open skies.
A gentle trekking day across the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s oldest volcanic landscapes. The terrain is wide, open, and scenic, offering panoramic views of Mount Meru and surrounding valleys. This is an important acclimatization stage, allowing the body to adjust before higher altitude gains. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp for dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, ascend toward Lava Tower (4,600m), entering the alpine desert zone. This section provides key acclimatization benefits as the route follows the “climb high, sleep low” principle. After a break at higher altitude, descend into the stunning Barranco Valley, surrounded by giant senecio plants and dramatic volcanic cliffs. Arrive at Barranco Camp, one of the most scenic camps on Kilimanjaro. Dinner and overnight camping.
After breakfast, tackle the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical ascent offering breathtaking views from the top. Continue through ridges and valleys with dramatic alpine scenery. Arrive at Karanga Camp, an important acclimatization stop before the final ascent phase. Dinner and overnight camping.
After breakfast, continue climbing into the alpine desert zone, where conditions become colder and more rugged. The landscape is stark, dramatic, and powerful in its simplicity. Arrive at Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit attempt. Rest, hydrate, and prepare for the midnight push to the summit. Early dinner and rest.
Around midnight, begin the summit ascent under a star-filled sky. The climb is slow and steady, leading first to Stella Point (5,739m), then along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. At sunrise, reach the summit — a powerful and emotional achievement above glaciers, clouds, and the continent below. After brief celebration and photography, descend back to Barafu Camp for rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp for overnight camping.
After breakfast, descend through lush rainforest trails back to Mweka Gate. At the gate, receive your official summit certificate and celebrate your achievement of conquering Mount Kilimanjaro. Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha for rest and departure.
