Day-by-Day Itinerary
Your safari begins early in Nairobi with a scenic drive northwards through central Kenya. The route passes through lush highlands, coffee plantations, Nyeri town, Nanyuki, and the equator region before descending into the arid northern frontier.
As you approach Samburu, the scenery changes dramatically—green landscapes give way to rugged hills, dry riverbeds, and acacia-dotted plains. This transition marks your entry into true northern wilderness.
You arrive at your lodge or tented camp along the Ewaso Nyiro River, where you are welcomed with refreshments and check-in.
After lunch and a short rest, you embark on your first afternoon game drive. This introduction to Samburu offers sightings of elephants bathing in the river, giraffes feeding on thorn trees, and antelope species adapted to arid conditions.
As the sun sets, return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay under the sounds of the wild.
After an early breakfast, depart for a full-day exploration of Samburu National Reserve.
The focus today is the Ewaso Nyiro River ecosystem, where wildlife gathers due to scarce water resources. This creates concentrated and highly rewarding game viewing.
You will search for the Northern Special Five:
Grevy’s Zebra (larger and rarer than common zebra)
Reticulated Giraffe (distinct geometric patterns)
Beisa Oryx (desert-adapted antelope)
Somali Ostrich (blue-legged variant)
Gerenuk (antelope that stands on hind legs to feed)
Predator tracking is also a highlight, with lions resting on rocky outcrops, leopards hidden in riverine forests, and cheetahs scanning open plains for prey.
A picnic lunch is enjoyed inside the reserve under acacia trees or near the riverbanks, maximizing time in the wild.
In the afternoon, continue game drives focusing on photography, wildlife behavior observation, and river crossings. Return to your lodge at sunset for dinner and relaxation.
After breakfast, enjoy a morning game drive as you leave Samburu and enter Buffalo Springs National Reserve, located just across the river.
Buffalo Springs offers a slightly different landscape—open plains, volcanic lava formations, and natural springs that attract large concentrations of wildlife.
Arrive at your lodge or camp for check-in and lunch.
In the afternoon, proceed for a game drive exploring Buffalo Springs. Expect elephant herds, giraffes, zebras, oryx, and predators moving between Samburu and Buffalo Springs freely.
The landscapes here are more open, offering excellent visibility for photography and long-range wildlife viewing.
Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Today is dedicated to exploring Shaba Conservancy, one of Kenya’s most dramatic and least crowded safari areas.
Shaba is characterized by volcanic terrain, rugged hills, lava flows, and desert-like scenery. It offers a completely different safari feel compared to Samburu and Buffalo Springs.
Morning game drive focuses on predator tracking and elephant movement along river corridors.
You may encounter lions resting on rocky ridges, leopards in shaded riverine forests, and large herds of Grevy’s zebra and oryx moving across open plains.
Picnic lunch is taken inside the conservancy, followed by afternoon photography sessions in golden light across volcanic landscapes.
Return to camp for dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, enjoy a relaxed morning game drive or optional Samburu cultural village visit.
This cultural experience introduces you to the Samburu people—semi-nomadic pastoralists closely related to the Maasai. You will experience traditional dances, warrior ceremonies, beadwork craftsmanship, and learn about their deep connection with livestock and wildlife.
In the afternoon, return for a relaxed game drive along the river ecosystem focusing on elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and birdlife such as kingfishers, bee-eaters, and hornbills.
Dinner and overnight stay at your lodge.
Today is a full immersion into Northern Kenya’s wilderness rhythm.
Early morning game drives offer the best predator activity, especially lions hunting or moving before sunrise. The soft golden light also creates ideal photography conditions.
The day continues with slow-paced exploration of different habitats—riverbanks, dry plains, and rocky outcrops—searching for rare sightings and observing natural animal behavior without rush.
This is a day for patience, photography, and connection with the wilderness.
Return to camp for sunset relaxation, dinner, and storytelling around the fire.
Enjoy your final sunrise in the African wilderness with a short morning game drive or relaxed breakfast at the lodge.
After check-out, begin your journey back to Nairobi through Isiolo, Nanyuki, and the central highlands. The scenery gradually shifts from arid wilderness back to green agricultural landscapes.
Optional stop at the Equator landmark or Mount Kenya viewpoints for photos.
Arrive in Nairobi in the afternoon, marking the end of your Northern Kenya safari expedition.
Wildlife Experience
Northern Kenya is one of the most unique ecosystems in Africa, offering species not found in southern parks. The Samburu ecosystem is especially famous for its rare northern species, high predator density, and elephant populations along the river system.
Expect elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, crocodiles, hippos, and a rich variety of arid-zone adapted animals alongside over 350 bird species.
Why This Safari Stands Out
This safari is not just a game drive circuit—it is a true wilderness expedition into Kenya’s raw frontier.
It offers rare species found nowhere else in Kenya, dramatic volcanic and desert landscapes, and intimate wildlife encounters without crowds or congestion. It is ideal for photographers, adventure seekers, repeat safari travelers, and those wanting something beyond the standard safari routes.
