7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking – Machame Route

Overview

This 7-day Kilimanjaro Machame Route is one of the most beautiful, balanced, and successful summit routes on the mountain, designed for trekkers who want both adventure and a strong chance of reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

Known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame is highly regarded for its dramatic scenery, varied ecological zones, and superior acclimatization profile. The additional day compared to the 6-day option allows a slower, more comfortable ascent — significantly improving summit success rates while reducing altitude stress.
The route climbs through lush rainforest, alpine moorlands, volcanic ridges, and glacier landscapes, offering a continuous transformation of scenery each day. The journey is physically engaging but rewarding, with professional support teams ensuring safety, pacing, and motivation throughout.

This is the preferred route for climbers seeking the perfect balance between challenge, scenery, and summit success.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

After breakfast in Moshi or Arusha, transfer to Machame Gate for registration and briefing. Begin your ascent through dense tropical rainforest, where towering trees, moss-covered trails, and rich birdlife create an atmospheric introduction to Kilimanjaro. The trail is steady and immersive, offering a true wilderness feel. Arrive at Machame Camp in the late afternoon for dinner and overnight camping.
After breakfast, leave the rainforest behind and enter the heath and moorland zone. The vegetation becomes thinner, revealing sweeping views of Mount Meru and surrounding plains. The trail ascends steadily onto the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s oldest volcanic formations. Arrive at Shira Camp for rest, dinner, and overnight camping under open skies.
A key acclimatization day begins with ascent toward Lava Tower (4,600m). The landscape becomes more rugged and alpine, offering dramatic volcanic scenery. After spending time at high altitude for adaptation, descend into the breathtaking Barranco Valley, known for giant senecio plants and dramatic cliffs. Arrive at Barranco Camp, one of the most scenic camps on Kilimanjaro. Dinner and overnight camping.
After breakfast, tackle the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical climb offering thrilling views at the top. Continue through ridges and valleys with panoramic mountain scenery. Arrive at Karanga Camp, an important acclimatization stop before the summit push. Dinner and overnight camping.
After breakfast, continue ascending into the alpine desert zone, where the landscape becomes stark and dramatic. The terrain is rocky, cold, and exposed, marking the final preparation stage. Arrive at Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit attempt. Rest, hydrate, and prepare for the midnight ascent. Early dinner and rest.
Around midnight, begin the summit push under starlit skies. Ascend slowly toward Stella Point (5,739m), then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. At sunrise, reach the summit — a powerful, emotional, and unforgettable achievement above glaciers and clouds. After photos and celebration, descend back to Barafu Camp for rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp for overnight camping.
After breakfast, continue descending through lush montane rainforest back to Mweka Gate. At the gate, receive your summit certificate and celebrate your achievement of conquering Mount Kilimanjaro. Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha for rest and departure.
