6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking – Rongai Route

Overview

This 6-day Kilimanjaro Rongai Route trek offers a distinctive and quieter approach to Africa’s highest peak, entering from the northern side near the Kenya–Tanzania border.
Unlike the busier southern routes, Rongai is known for its peaceful trails, remote wilderness atmosphere, and drier climate conditions. It provides a more exclusive trekking experience with fewer crowds, making it ideal for travelers seeking solitude and a calmer ascent.

The route begins in cultivated farmland near the base and gradually climbs through pine forest, heath, and alpine desert zones before joining the main summit circuit near Kibo Peak. The descent follows the Marangu Route, completing a full traverse of the mountain.

Rongai is considered one of the most beginner-friendly Kilimanjaro routes due to its steady gradient and lower rainfall on the northern side, while still offering a full summit experience at Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

Day-by-Day Itinerary

After breakfast in Moshi or Arusha, you are transferred to the Rongai Gate on the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro.
After registration, begin your trek through cultivated farmland and gradually enter pine forest and montane woodland.
This section is quiet and less trafficked, offering a peaceful introduction to the mountain.
Arrive at Simba Camp in the late afternoon for dinner and overnight camping.
After breakfast, continue trekking through gradually changing vegetation zones.
The trail offers open views of the Kenyan plains to the north, creating a unique perspective not seen on southern routes.
The environment becomes more open as you enter the heath and moorland zone.
Arrive at Second Cave Camp for rest, dinner, and overnight camping.
After breakfast, continue ascending with steady progress across rolling terrain.
The landscape becomes increasingly dramatic, with volcanic formations and wider mountain views.
This is a shorter but important acclimatization stage, allowing your body to adjust to altitude.
Arrive at Kikelewa Camp, located in a sheltered valley, for dinner and overnight camping.
After breakfast, climb toward the alpine desert zone with more rugged and rocky terrain.
As you ascend, the scenery becomes more dramatic, with close views of Mawenzi Peak’s jagged formations.
Arrive at Mawenzi Tarn Camp, one of the most scenic camps on Kilimanjaro, set beneath towering volcanic spires.
Rest, acclimatize, and overnight at camp.
After breakfast, traverse across the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.
This wide, high-altitude desert landscape is one of the most unique environments on Kilimanjaro — barren, vast, and visually striking.
Arrive at Kibo Hut, the base camp for the summit attempt.
Rest, hydrate, and prepare for the midnight ascent.
Early dinner and rest are essential.
Around midnight, begin the final ascent toward the summit.
The climb is steep and challenging, leading through Gilman’s Point (5,685m) and continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
At sunrise, reach the summit — a powerful moment above glaciers, clouds, and the vast African landscape.
After celebration and photography, descend back to Kibo Hut for rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut or Marangu Gate depending on pace and itinerary plan.
